Local Business of the Month - The Small World Shop, Prestonpans
The Small World Shop in Prestonpans has been supporting communities in the developing world through the sale of fairly traded gifts and groceries for over two decades.
From it's Orchard Crescent base, the shop sells goods both over the counter and on a sale-or-return basis to clubs, schools and churches throughout the region.
Traidcraft has been fighting poverty through trade since 1979 and East Lothian resident Carol Morton was one of its earliest supporters. In 1985 she organised a week-long Traidcraft shop in Prestongrange Church Hall, Prestonpans. A year later Mrs Morton and a team of volunteers were running a fair trade shop in the former Council wages office in the town. Their aim: to bring about trade justice as a Christian response to poverty in the developing world.
Over twenty years later, the charity, now known as Small World Aid & Development Fund with it’s motto "For People and Planet", is run on those early principles. In addition to Traidcraft items, the Small World now also sells fairly traded products from Scottish organisation Equal Exchange and eco-friendly and cruelty-free products from Green City.
Whilst terms like social enterprise, ethical consumerism, corporate responsibility and sustainability are bandied around a lot nowadays - these are and always have been at the heart of The Small World Shop.
